Florists to Celebrate
Sometimes the best time to send someone flowers is when there is no special reason to, just to show someone how much you love them or how much you appreciate them. As well as birthdays and anniversaries there are two special days during the year where flowers play a large part. There is Valentines Day and Mothers Day which give a high demand on the local florists to be able to deliver all of the flowers on time.
Valentines Day
Sending flowers on Valentines Day, which is February 14th, has become very popular since the 17th Century. It is believed that the tradition of sending flowers on Valentines Day rose at the time of the Roman Empire. The patron saint for lovers is Saint Valentine and it is traditional to send roses to the one that you love, as it is believed that roses were the favourite flowers for the Roman God of Love and mother of Cupid, Venus. Different colour roses represent different things, as red roses signify passion, white is purity. These are popular colours to be sent on Valentines Day along with pink.
As Valentines Day is such a busy time for florists it is important to contact your local florist in good time and arrange your flowers so that they will be delivered on the day.
Mother's Day
Mother's Day traditionally falls in March and is the 4th Sunday of Lent. The history of Mothering Sunday goes back to the times of Ancient Greece when people honoured the Mother of the Gods, Rhea, for a day. In the 17th Century in the UK it became a tradition when servants were allowed to go back home to see their mothers for a day. On their way home they would pick a bunch of spring flowers to give to their mother as a token of their love.
Today we no longer go out on the morning of Mother’s Day and pick some flowers, but instead we will buy flowers from our local florist and either give then to our mothers or have them delivered. Mother’s Day bouquets are traditionally made with Spring flowers but there are so many flowers that are available from a florist these days that the choice is endless and a florist can make up the arrangement however you require.
